Boston After-School Music
What is B.A.M.?
Boston After-School Music (B.A.M.) is an organization that provides free, high-quality after-school music education for students in underserved areas where neighborhood schools lack the resources for a music program. In my time with B.A.M., the organization has taught in multiple modalities, whether that’s in person, at festivals, and online. All members of the organization are volunteers, and typically are pre-service music educators looking to help their community.
My Experience
I joined B.A.M. as a volunteer teacher, and was the ukulele instructor for a class of 6th and 7th grade students. After teaching that class to fruition, I eventually became more and more involved in the organization until I became a head instructor and curriculum developer for our Music Appreciation and Creation class. This curriculum was designed to be an online course adapted to the special-needs students of Madison Park Technical School. After teaching the class weekly for the duration of an academic school year, I stepped into an administration and recruitment role for the organization. Currently, we are working towards expanding the organization to more schools in our community.
